It involves using the smoke to cleanse spaces, objects, or individuals. When cleansing energies, smudging can help remove the negative energy and bring in a sense of peace.
Most of us can sense when a place or a person feels off or heavy. Smudging can help refresh the energy, making it feel lighter or more harmonious. Aromatic materials like white sage or palo santo are very popular materials for smudging because they have inherent properties that aid in purification. This practice combines the properties of the herbs with your intentions and prayer to create a positive environment, lighten the mood or cleanse your aura.
How to Smudge: A Beginner’s Guide
First and foremost, set your intentions, focus on what you want to release or invite.
Light the sage and allow it to smolder – I always start with the sage to neutralize the energy, but this is a personal choice, so you choose whichever works for you.
Waft and move the smoke throughout the space using your hand or a feather until you feel at peace with the new energy.
I usually follow up with the palo santo to invite back the positive energies.
